1. Choose light-colored clothing. Light colors make ticks easier to spot, especially tiny deer tick nymphs.
2. Tuck your pants inside your socks. This may not make you look great, but it will protect your skin from ticks.
3. Use insect repellent. The majority of insect repellents will work against them, but it might take more DEET, between 30 and 40 percent to make them disappear. Permethrin kills ticks in addition to repelling them. Products containing permethrin should be sprayed on clothes, not on the skin. Picaridin repels insects, including mosquitoes but not ticks.
4. Be in the middle or fairway of the path. You can not fly or jump with ticks so you can only be bitten if they come in contact with their environment: moist and often shady wooded areas with foliage, shrubs, and low-lying plants.
5. It’s sunny. They don’t like being in the open. The edge of any wooded or shaded area should be kept clear of lawn furniture and play equipment. You can picnic on a well-kept lawn, or an open area.
