Amazon won’t accept WIC payment in 2022 for groceries. WIC, which is run according to individual state guidelines, cannot be used online in general and is only eligible in stores. Amazon offers a discount for WIC customers who purchase Prime.

Amazon Doesn’t Accept WIC.

There are many possible explanations for Amazon not accepting WIC as part of its grocery program.

First, WIC guidelines are different from one state or another. Also, technology used for administering WIC was often not the same.

These disparities made WIC use in various states non-uniform until recent times. Amazon will therefore have to fulfil all requirements of each state.

As well, up until October 2020, not all states provided WIC benefits in the form of a card. They were provided as vouchers or paper checks by most states, but they could not be used online.

Although you are unable to use your WIC card for Amazon food purchases, it can be used to receive a discount on Amazon Prime.

Does Amazon Accept SNAP?

Amazon does accept SNAP EBT benefits, except in Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana and Montana, for use both at Amazon Fresh and on Amazon.com.

Many families that receive WIC benefits also qualify for SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as Food Stamps.

Amazon SNAP uses the same rules that they use in a brick-and–mortar grocery shop. Only foods intended for human consumption can be permitted.

Whole Foods accepts WIC

Whole Foods Amazon stores accept WIC. Bring your benefits card so that you can pick up WIC approved items.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017 for over $13 billion, making it the keystone of its online, same-day delivery grocery service.

So, while you’re technically using your WIC benefits at an Amazon-owned company, it’s still not permitted as part of the company’s online storefront.

Even if Whole Foods cannot be purchased on Amazon Fresh using WIC, brick-and mortar stores can still provide your benefits.

The above-mentioned items are general examples, as guidelines in each state may differ.

It’s also worth noting that while Whole Foods does carry many of these types of products listed above, WIC tends to permit only the most generic form of the food.

WIC-approved chicken eggs must not be of any specialty varieties, such as organic and free-range. Whole Foods’ business model is based on these specialties.

You might have to shop close for the items you are looking for.

Amazon to Accept WIC Futurely?

WIC is not currently available on Amazon. But, it may be in the near future. The federal government ordered that WIC state agencies start to issue WIC cards for all WIC recipients by 2020.

The federal government’s Department of Agriculture stated that their focus is to make it easy for recipients to obtain the benefits. Online ordering using WIC benefits is in the works, as well.

USDA published a November 2020 report that Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition received a 3-year grant from the USDA to develop and test a model for online order.

Online ordering is possible for SNAP and SNAP benefits.
