Patients often have questions about the terms “physiotherapy” and “physical therapy”. How can physiotherapy be distinguished from physical therapy?

The answer, you may be shocked to learn, is that physical therapy and physiotherapy are exactly the same! In fact, there’s no difference in the terms, and they can all be used interchangeably. They can be used interchangeably.

However, if you were pushed to make a distinction, there could – perhaps – be one small difference between them. These differences are primarily regional in nature. Furthermore, Americans often use “physical therapy,” to describe the treatment that is provided. However, this may make it difficult for people who are not from the US to understand the difference.
