Walmart spends a lot on the need to be competitive with Amazon. Walmart strives to be a strong competitor in new markets, whether it is fashion or global expansion.
Walmart may seem overwhelming beyond the large box stores, but we can help you get your head around it. It’s huge. Next up, we’ll be highlighting ten companies Walmart has the most connections with.
Hayneedle is an online furniture site that is well known for its cheap but stylish furniture options. While I had many opportunities to browse the website, my dream was for a simple, elegant remodel that would suit all rooms of my home. But Walmart owns the site.
Walmart bought Hayneedle from them in 2016, in hopes of giving them an online shop.
Walmart also bought Jet.com 2016 for $3.3 billion, exactly the same reasons as Hayneedle.
Walmart wanted to be in direct competition against Amazon.com by acquiring the company.
You can now type Jet.com directly into your browser and it will direct you to Walmart.com. Walmart.com has become a reincarnation of Jet.com’s design, style, and content, leaving the domain name.
In 2011, Massmart, an African company was bought for 2.54 million dollars. Massmart is the 2nd largest goods distributor in Africa and has over 420 stores in the country, selling general goods, groceries, and liquor.
Massmart’s corporate umbrella includes several other businesses that offer discounted products for African consumers, including Massbuilders, Massdiscounters, and Massbuilders. Walmarts sub-Saharan reach has been expanded through this acquisition.
Art.com can be found in the same way as Hayneedle and is known for its affordable wall decor. The site boasts the most extensive online collection of art and decor.
Walmart made an unanticipated decision when it purchased Shoes.com in 2017. It cost $9 million and allowed Walmart to continue to offer the same products Amazon is selling, but at a much lower price.
Walmart acquired this company to expand their online presence and increase digital sales.
Bonobos is first on this list. This was Walmart’s move to include online fashion in their product line. Bonobos is an online men’s fashion site that offers affordable, high-quality clothing.
The brand was acquired by Walmart in 2017 at a cost of 310 million dollars. It helped Walmart continue its relentless quest to compete with Amazon on a virtual field.
Walmart’s desire to expand its fashion offerings did not end with men’s clothes. In the same year as Bonobos was acquired, Walmart snagged Moosejaw for $51 billion, allowing them to bring a rugged and outdoorsy aspect to their growing fashion sector.
Walmart is the home of one of America’s most beloved brands, which they use to prepare for hiking and camping.
Bare Necessities sells elegant, sophisticated products for a staggeringly affordable price. It was shocking to me to find that the Walmart store could offer such “elegant” or “sophisticated” terms.
Purchase in 2018, once again, Walmart hoped to leverage Bare Necessities’ popularity online to improve its standing in relation to Amazon.
Walmart bought Eloquii Plus-Sized Fashion giant in their latest venture into the fashion world.
Elonquii, unlike Jet.com has kept its website’s apparent independent identity. Elonquii’s association with Walmart allows the price drops to be achieved.
It remains to be seen if Elonquii will be worth the $100 million that Walmart spent on it as yet another attempt to bring it into the same arena as Amazon.
Walmart established Sam’s Club in 1983 as an entry point to the lucrative world of discount, high volume shopping.
Similar to Costco and BJ’s, you must have a membership to this “exclusive” club that you pay yearly in order to access the quantity discounts on offer in the giant superstore.
The list is not complete. While this is not a complete list of all Walmart companies nor all its reasons for acquisitions, it should show how vast Walmart’s influence has been on many lives.

The Indian startup was founded in India and purchased by Walmart in 2019. Walmart hoped their tech design expertise and superior customer service would enable them to get ahead in both the online and in-person markets.
Walmart didn’t disclose the price of the Indian corporate treasure, but it is clear to see its wisdom and value for Walmart.
Amigo is a large grocery store chain, largely based in the US territory of Puerto Rico which was purchased by Walmart in 2002.
Walmart’s acquisition of Amigo was extremely lucrative. It allowed them to join forces with Amigo and expand their retail business. Amigo also received steeper discounts for its customers. This is similar to Super Walmart.

Seiyu in Japan was the biggest supermarket chain. This acquisition made sense for Walmart.
Seiyu, originally opening in 1963 was already a well-respected food store with Japanese customers. Walmart was then able to leverage this reputation by teaming up with Rakuten and establishing the virtual grocery shop and delivery service as an all-in-one online option.
The company is also located in Central America and Puerto Rico.
