Abstract

In order to address the symptoms of intervertebral disc shearing (IVDH), patients should seek out complementary and more conventional treatments. In this study, Reiki was compared to physiotherapy for the relief of lower back pain and improvement in daily activities (ADL). The clinical trial included 60 IVDH patients who were randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups: physiotherapy, Reiki or drug therapy. ADL was assessed by using ADL-Instrumental ADL questionnaires and visual analog scales (VAS). Before and following the intervention, pain intensity and ADL were recorded. There was a significant difference in the pain intensity and ADL improvements between Reiki and drug therapy. In managing pain and improving ADL, Reiki and physiotherapy were not significantly different. Although both Reiki and physiotherapy can help patients suffering from IVDH in pain management and improve ADL, Reiki has a faster and more effective treatment option than physiotherapy.

Abstract

Introduction: Low back pain is a chronic recurrent symptom, which can lower the patient’s quality of life. The technology advancements in automated home massage systems offer an attractive alternative to conventional physiotherapy. But, their effectiveness has yet to be evaluated. In this research, we compared the efficiency and costs of traditional physiotherapy to determine the effect of a massage seat.

Methods Following randomization and allocation, 56 participants were assigned to receive either mechanical massage (n = 31) or physiotherapy. Pain severity was assessed by a visual analog score (VAS), while satisfaction was assessed via the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Functional Rating Index (FRI), which measures quality of life, was used to evaluate the results. Comparison of monthly rental charges for chair massage, physiotherapy and other fees was done to assess cost-effectiveness.

Results: In both cases, physiotherapy and massage chair both proved effective for pain relief as measured with VAS (P.001), satisfaction according to MPQ (P..001) and improvements in quality of life as determined by FRI(P..001) For massage chair, the VAS and FRI scores was significantly higher (P =.03 and.03 respectively). In MPQ, there was no difference between the groups. Only 60.17% cost for massage chair therapy compared to physiotherapy. (P =.001).

Conclusions. Although home massage chairs were cost effective, pain control and disability rates improved with physiotherapy. Although the results of our study showed that massage chairs are promising for pain relief and quality-of-life modification, the effectiveness of physiotherapy was still better. Therefore, the chair should not be considered as a substitute for physiotherapy.

What is physiotherapy for back pain?

Consult a professional if your back pain persists after just a few weeks or is severe.

You can get physiotherapy for many kinds of back pain. The following might be helpful:

A non-specific lower back problem – when no other cause, such as an injury or medical condition, has been found.

Sciatic pain – this spreads from your back down your legs and may be caused by a prolapsed disc (when a disc in your spine bulges out of its normal shape and presses on a nerve).

The degenerative disc disease is a condition that causes back pain due to the aging of your discs.

Spinalstenosis is when your spinal canal narrows. This puts pressure on the spinal cord and can cause pain.

You can either have your GP refer you to a physiotherapist, or arrange for an appointment. For more information on this, see our section on finding a physiotherapist below.

Your GP and physiotherapist might recommend physiotherapy. This could be part of a complete treatment plan which may include manual therapy, a program that incorporates exercise, painkillers, and psychological support. Combining a variety of therapies may be the best way to get rid of back pain. A physiotherapist can help you identify the cause and suggest ways to alleviate it.

Comments

This is good news for people suffering from back pain. If you exercise daily, you will get rid of it.

When considering surgery, there are some important things to remember. You are so glad that you have options.

It is eye-catching. For information regarding backaches or other issues, this is an essential read.

Continued the exercises for several more weeks until the problem was fully resolved. The problem hasn’t come back after three years.

Thanks for the nice blog. Had a rather abrupt onset of severe lower back and leg pains without apparent causes. About to order my Hoveround. My primary care physician confirmed that I had lumbar spinalstenosis. She also recommended certain exercises, which can be found at the Mayo Clinic site. Although he did not suggest surgery, he mentioned the possibility. The problem was almost gone by the time that I went to the specialist three to four weeks after the fact. After a couple of weeks, the problem was resolved completely and it hasn’t returned in three years.

If you have any information about exercises for lumbar spine stenosis, please direct me to the Mayo Clinic link. The condition was just diagnosed to my husband. We would be interested in seeing the exercises.

Can I get a scan to check my lower back?

For the vast majority of people a scan is unnecessary. The majority of cases of lower back pain can be treated with a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment.

Lower back scans can often be difficult to interpret. It is not known if abnormalities detected on scans cause lower back pain.

An extensive scientific study revealed that half of all people aged 30 and older had disc issues. That prevalence increased with increasing age. It would be impossible to treat everyone according only to what is visible on the scan. For serious cases, we may refer you to specialist or a scan.

What can physiotherapy do for my lower back pains?

Lower back pain can be treated with physiotherapy. We have a wealth of evidence to back up the methods we use. Manual therapy is a combination of graded exercises and manual therapy that works well for most lower back problems. Manual therapy includes massage and joint manipulations. These techniques reduce pain and help to restore movement. The program includes mobility and range-of motion exercises as well as trunk and leg strengthening exercises. Finally, the exercise program allows for gradual return of activities. Other forms of therapy that physiotherapists may use include taping, acupuncture and TENS.
