In order to address the symptoms of intervertebral disc shearing (IVDH), patients should seek out complementary and more conventional treatments. In this study, Reiki was compared to physiotherapy for the relief of lower back pain and improvement in daily activities (ADL). The clinical trial included 60 IVDH patients who were randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups: physiotherapy, Reiki or drug therapy. ADL was assessed by using ADL-Instrumental ADL questionnaires and visual analog scales (VAS). Before and following the intervention, pain intensity and ADL were recorded. There was a significant difference in the pain intensity and ADL improvements between Reiki and drug therapy. In managing pain and improving ADL, Reiki and physiotherapy were not significantly different. Although both Reiki and physiotherapy can help patients suffering from IVDH in pain management and improve ADL, Reiki has a faster and more effective treatment option than physiotherapy.

Introduction: Low back pain is a chronic recurrent symptom, which can lower the patient’s quality of life. The technology advancements in automated home massage systems offer an attractive alternative to conventional physiotherapy. But, their effectiveness has yet to be evaluated. In this research, we compared the efficiency and costs of traditional physiotherapy to determine the effect of a massage seat.

Methods Following randomization and allocation, 56 participants were assigned to receive either mechanical massage (n = 31) or physiotherapy. Pain severity was assessed by a visual analog score (VAS), while satisfaction was assessed via the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Functional Rating Index (FRI), which measures quality of life, was used to evaluate the results. Comparison of monthly rental charges for chair massage, physiotherapy and other fees was done to assess cost-effectiveness.

Results: In both cases, physiotherapy and massage chair both proved effective for pain relief as measured with VAS (P.001), satisfaction according to MPQ (P..001) and improvements in quality of life as determined by FRI(P..001) For massage chair, the VAS and FRI scores was significantly higher (P =.03 and.03 respectively). In MPQ, there was no difference between the groups. Only 60.17% cost for massage chair therapy compared to physiotherapy. (P =.001).

Conclusions. Although home massage chairs were cost effective, pain control and disability rates improved with physiotherapy. Although the results of our study showed that massage chairs are promising for pain relief and quality-of-life modification, the effectiveness of physiotherapy was still better. Therefore, the chair should not be considered as a substitute for physiotherapy.
