Ged Works Program

Amazon has more programs like these in the US. Employees will get many benefits, including healthcare after a 90 day period, vacation & overtime, paid time off, weekly schedules and flexible work hours for those who are enrolled in school’s education program.

The program is similar to the GED Works Program, where several large U.S. employers, such as Hilton Hotel Group, Walmart, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and many more, work closely together with GED Testing Service to help their employees get a GED and move ahead in their careers.

Apply at any of Amazon Fulfillment Centers. The Fulfillment Centers are where customers order will be picked up, packed, and shipped.

These jobs require you to be physically active and can move quickly. These jobs require you to work a set schedule and bring customer orders to life. Shifts can include overnight and day work, as well as a weekend. This page has more details on how you can get your GED.

These are the Departments/Roles that Responsible for Background Screening

A policy for in-house background checks should identify all departments and roles within the company responsible for background screening, as well as the results.

It should also define the authority of the responsible department/roles to act on behalf of the company to seek the relevant public or private information of an applicant needed to perform background screening.

Doing this helps organizations control who acts on their behalf when accessing sensitive information and fix responsibility within the company in case of an inaccurate background investigation.

Amazon Background Check Policy

It is important for employers to find reliable and trustworthy candidates. You will have to go through a series of references before you can apply for Amazon jobs. These include conventional background checks, prior employment verification, and sometimes even credit history depending on the position you apply for.

You must agree to Amazon’s background check upon submitting your online application.

Without this, you’ll be unable to complete your application. The background check results can take up to 4 weeks. If you pass reference checks, then congratulations – you landed a new job.

Amazon background checks are able to look into events up to 10 years old, which is a significant difference from the standard background check. To conduct these checks, Amazon typically uses a third-party company.

If Amazon rejects your application for any reason, they will contact you. If Amazon doesn’t notify you, they can still contact you to inquire about the rejected application.

Amazon does not automatically deny you employment if your criminal record is clear. Amazon reviews every applicant on an individual basis. They may consider candidates with criminal records that do not affect their application for the job.

For example, an applicant with a low-level drug offense is more likely to be considered, while someone who has been convicted for theft or fraud is more likely to be rejected.

If you are interested in knowing what data is available to you before you submit your application for Amazon jobs or other companies, you may run a background search on yourself. There are resources online that allow you to check your background information.

If a red flag appears in your background check, you can adjust your job search accordingly. This information will help you apply for companies that have lenient requirements when it comes to background checks.

Workplace Safety Remains Paramount As Marijuana Laws Evolve

On a weekly basis, I field questions about the permissibility of marijuana testing in specific regions of the country. As efforts to legalize cannabis gain traction, employers must untangle an increasingly complex web of laws to stay in compliance while ensuring that workplace safety remains uncompromised. How?

Consult with your lawyer. The laws regarding recreational or medical marijuana are not the same in every state. Local jurisdictions — counties and even individual cities — may also have laws to consider. Not only are laws governing marijuana usage important, but so is the rest of us. Some states have introduced standards impacting the hiring process. The Department of Labor in New York has stated that employers can’t discriminate on the basis of marijuana use. This applies to all public and private employers in the state, regardless of size or industry. Similarly, Philadelphia enacted a new law on January 1, 2022, that prohibits employers or agencies acting on an employer’s behalf from requiring a pre-employment drug test for marijuana. The bottom line: before you modify existing policies or establish new ones, run them by your legal counsel to ensure they comply with all applicable regulations.

You might consider aligning your current marijuana policies with those for alcohol. The 1991 New York City subway accident was a major catalyst for current Department of Transportation requirements about workplace substance abuse. After the engineer was found to be under the influence of alcohol during the crash investigation, Congress passed the Omnibus Transportation Employee Drug Testing Act of 1991 (a crack vial was also found in the engineer’s cab). It makes sense to treat compliance in the same way as alcohol and marijuana. Employers and employees sign a risk-appropriate drug screening agreement that covers the employer’s post-hire as well as pre-hire requirements. This policy is meant to protect the workplace and any public with whom these workers may come in contact. If applied consistently and fairly, it can help ensure that new hires and current employees create and maintain a safe workplace without creating an undue burden for individuals acting responsibly and within their legal rights. Even if marijuana is decriminalized in the state where they reside, a good policy allows people to continue their normal work routines.

Important to remember that decriminalized marijuana usage is not prohibited in all locations. For example, certain job categories are exempt, including positions in law enforcement, positions requiring a commercial driver’s license, and positions of trust, such as those involving the supervision or care of children, medical patients, or other vulnerable persons. This allows you to mitigate risk where it is most appropriate while adjusting your background screening and drug testing policies to meet new standards.

Seattle, Wa

Seattle employers are prohibited from running criminal background checks until after an initial screening has eliminated unqualified job applicants by ensuring that all applicants possess the minimum qualifications that are necessary to successfully perform the job. Employers may only take adverse action based on a job applicant’s arrest record if there is a legitimate business reason tying the arrest to the duties of the job.

Employers must inform applicants of any adverse actions they are considering. They should also identify the information that is disqualifying and allow them to reply. Employers should ensure there are no policies or practices that exclude anyone convicted or arrested from work.

Seattle adopted an ordinance in November 2013 that applied to private and public employers. It stated that background checks are only necessary for specific positions. The applicant can appeal if they are denied employment based upon a background report. They will receive a copy and disqualifying information.

The applicant has a minimum of two days to provide corrected information or an explanation of the circumstances on the report. Background checks cannot be delayed until a qualified pool has been identified under the ordinance. A criminal record can be used to exclude an applicant from a job if it is necessary for legitimate business reasons.

When Does Amazon Do A Background Check?

The typical hiring process at Amazon has several steps. Here’s a quick summary of the steps involved in hiring at Amazon.

  • Submit a completed application
  • Online testing
  • Interview (may be phone, online or in-person)
  • Drug testing

If you have passed all the steps of the employment process above, you might at this point receive an offer of employment. It took a while to reach this stage. Be patient. Amazon will send you an offer letter.

It is at this point that you will need to pass all of the company’s employee background checks to secure your position. You will still need to get a job offer.

Three In-House Background checks have fewer legal obligations

An organization does not have to obtain a formal permit from an applicant before performing an in-house background investigation.

Some employers still add checkboxes in their employment forms seeking applicant permission to run background checks. But theyare not legally bound to do so.

Companies are not required to provide copies of information that isn’t publicly accessible about applicants they discover through third-party or direct sources.

However, applicants still have the right to receive a copy of any public information that employers view during their background screening.

What Is The Application And Interview Process For Amazon?

It’s possible to apply for employment online through Amazon’s official website at Once you have created an account, you can start an application and view various job openings. You may also provide any information you need. This procedure is identical to any other online job submission.

Amazon will contact you for an interview once you submit your initial application. Keep an eye on that e-mail in case Amazon tries to reach you in the following stages. An examination that should last between 20 and 30 minutes is required for many higher-level positions at Amazon. It’s a technique for Amazon to see if you have the right set of talents and experience for the job.

Once you have met the minimum qualifications required for the job and passed the assessment, the interview process begins. Interviews can be conducted over the telephone, but the company may also conduct in-person interviews.

Your job offer will be conditional on passing the Amazon interview and seeming like a good match for the role. You must successfully pass the pre-employment screenings to get hired.

4 Your Honesty

It can be embarrassing and difficult to speak about your conviction as a felon. You must remember that if you are not honest while filling out your form or during the interview, Amazon will still learn about your conviction since they run criminal background checks on all employees.

If your conviction was less than 7 years ago, it will come up in this background check. Lying about it during an interview or forgetting to mention it on the application will lower your chances of getting a job.

Whether it is a misdemeanor or a felony, you must be open about it because lying won’t get you anywhere, and the chances of you getting a job become negligible.

Criminal History

More than 77 million Americans have a criminal history, thatas roughly one in three. Therefore, to stay safe from any Negligent Hiring lawsuits and ensure a safe working environment for your employees, it might be a good idea to conduct detailed criminal background checks on your applicants.

To identify criminal activity, you can also use the applicant’s SSN. However, youall need to check the following databases and repositories for more comprehensive screening.

  • County Criminal Record Searches
  • Statewide criminal records search
  • National Criminal Records Search (NCRD).
  • Federal Criminal Records Search
  • FBI Fingerprint Database Search
  • International Homeland Security Search (OFAC).

For complete criminal background screening, it is possible to request fingerprint verification from potential employees in certain cases.

Amazon Background Checks: What Are They?

Amazon performs a background check on all applicants, even though they aren’t required to provide fingerprints at time of employment. It checks back for seven years and considers any minor or major convictions that may have been made during this time.

Amazon may consider a person who has been convicted of a crime, although each applicant is assessed individually. Generally speaking, Amazon is less likely to recruit someone with a history of fraud or theft from a previous employer.

Low-level drug charges or other offenses that don’t immediately affect the employment function and duties are more likely to be taken into consideration by employers.

Amazon performs traditional background checks. A third party firm searches public databases for information to determine if the applicant was ever arrested or charged with any crime.

When Amazon completes a background check, they make a hiring choice in the next several business days. Amazon must inform candidates about ineligibility for the job if they have done background checks.

Amazon cannot use it to determine whether or not you are qualified to work for the company. However, in other states there may be additional regulations that shorten this time. To find out how far back Amazon will look into your criminal record, you should consult your state laws.

Can A Felon Work At The Amazon Fulfillment Center?

There are more than 200 positions at Amazon fulfillment centers across the United States that offer entry-level jobs.

Amazon is not one of the companies that judges people based on criminal records. However, they do not work with felons because of certain factors.

Amazon has a very slim chance that felons convicted of the following offenses will be accepted.

  • Do you need drugs?
  • Sexual offenders
  • Violent crimes

However, this does not mean you won’t get any job at Amazon. Irrespective of your conviction, you should still apply at Amazon to try your luck. Amazon may offer you an opportunity due to the large number of available positions. You should try and apply for multiple positions since this increases your odds of getting hired.

In most states, accessing a criminal record older than 7 years is not permitted. The Amazon application form has a clear question that asks you if you were convicted for a felony in the past 7 years.

If you were worried about lying about your conviction, this is something you won’t have to worry about if your crime is older than 7 years.

This means Amazon won’t know of your felony charges and since it won’t show up in background check either, you can leave it behind. However, this is dependent on the state. In some states, your records can be expunged or sealed after 5 years while others may take 10 years for the records to be covered.

One of the major criteria while hiring for Amazon is your experience and skillset. If you have experience in jobs that are similar to the ones Amazon is currently offering, the chances of you getting the job increases automatically.

You can get great recommendations if you do not have experience.

Amazon is always looking for individuals with good moral character. Your chances of getting hired are increased if you can show that you are morally upright.

Volunteering for the community is another way to improve your resume’s weight. Volunteering for community service doesn’t make you any money, but it can help build your character and that will be a key factor when applying for a job.

Which laws and regulations govern Amazon’s background checks?

As a US-based employer, Amazon is subject to the same laws and regulations as all other US employers. Amazon’s background checks are also subject to the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other state laws.

If you are worried about your criminal record check, the FCRA is the law you need to know about. The FCRA states that employers cannot consider criminal convictions that occurred more than seven years back.

That means, if your criminal record is from more than seven years ago, you can be confident that Amazon is not allowed to consider it when deciding whether or not to hire you.

In some states, there are additional regulations that reduce this time period even further. We would, therefore, recommend you check what the law is where you are so you know how far back Amazon can look.

Amazon Background Check Policy 2022

Washington State Background Check Laws

The state of Washington has both statewide and local laws that govern the use of background reports that basically parallel the FCRA. For instance, employers are prohibited from requesting background reports without disclosing that they are seeking a report from a CRA, specifying the type of information they are seeking, and obtaining the applicant’s written authorization.

They must also inform the applicant about their rights to a copy their report. If adverse action is taken on the basis of the information in the report, the applicant must be provided with the CRA’s information, a description of their rights, and be provided with an opportunity to dispute any information in the report that they feel is erroneous.

Additionally, the CRAs can’t report criminal records, including indictments or arrests that have final disposition dates older than seven year from the date the report was made for positions with a minimum salary of $20,000. If the salary is over $20,000, the seven-year limitation doesn’t apply.

Washington has its own statewide Ban the Box/Fair Chance legislation. Spokane and Seattle have also enacted laws that relate to criminal records checks.

According to the statewide law, employers with one or more employees are prohibited from checking into an applicant’s criminal history until it has been determined that the applicant meets the basic qualifications for the job they are seeking. Employers cannot require job applicants to reveal prior criminal records or post jobs that prohibit people with criminal histories from applying.

A state law also requires that criminal investigations into convictions cannot be made without the consent of the State Fair Chance Act. This applies to all convictions related to the job duties and occurred in the last ten years.

Employers are prohibited from requesting credit-related information on background checks of potential applicants unless such creditworthiness information substantially relates to the job, or is required by law, and the employer discloses to the applicant, in writing, their reasons for requesting this type of information.

Those with a criminal history may petition the courts to have records of certain types of convictions vacated. If such a record is vacated, the individual with such a record may respond to employers who ask about their criminal history in the negative, as if they were never convicted of the crime.

Potential employers cannot access the social media accounts of job candidates. Employers are prohibited from requesting, requiring, or attempting to coerce current employees or job applicants to divulge the login information for their personal social media accounts. They cannot coerce employees or potential job applicants to access their social media accounts in the employer’s presence, nor can the employer insist that they be added as a contact on an employee’s or potential job applicant’s social media account.

Most importantly, employers are prohibited from taking adverse action against any employee or job applicant who refuses to comply with such illegal requests for access to their personal social media accounts. There are several situations where employers may access an individual’s social media accounts, namely if it is related to a specific investigation and involves certain factors relative to ensuring compliance with applicable laws. Employer-issued accounts or devices are exempted from the law.

In conjunction with the statewide law banning the box from job applications, Washington also became one of only a few states that also banned the box from public college applications, delaying conviction questions until later in the college application process.

Step 6: Compare Prices

Before you choose a background checking company, make sure to consider their pricing. Most companies offer custom pricing plans that consider their clientas testing needs. Get quotes from several service providers before you decide on the right one for your business.

Step 6: Allow The Candidate To Take Corrective Measures

Employers should share the results of their background checks with the applicant along with the publicly available information used in screening and allow the candidates to respond in a suitable time period.

Reducing Hiring And Screening Turnaround Time

These changes can reduce the time it takes to hire and screen background applicants.

  • Do not run background checks on every candidate. You should create a policy for background screening that determines the type of checks to be run depending on job.
  • You can use an applicant tracking system or online application portal to ensure that all information about your candidate is correct.

Amazon is likely to look only at the last boss of an applicant, or check in with many, depending upon your work history.

They may appear daunting initially, but you don’t need to worry too much about them, especially if they are based on a positive impression you made at your previous workplace.

If your resume is honest and transparent, you will likely pass the reference check without any major issues.

Amazon doesn’t require you to have a resume for hourly work. In that instance, Amazon is more concerned with the application, background check, drug test, and then interview.
