How come Costco Gas Prices are So Low?
Costco is able to keep gas prices at such a low price because they charge a membership fee. Costco Kirkland Signature gas cannot be bought by anyone other than Costco members.
A personal member costs $60 to $120 each year depending on the benefits available.
Costco accounts for 75% to 75% in profits from its membership. Costco is able to keep grocery prices as low as possible by keeping the price of gasoline and groceries at a reasonable level.
If you do not fill up your Costco car regularly, the membership will be ineffective.
Apparently, to make up the cost of the membership, you would have to refuel at Costco around 35 or more times a year, assuming you only use your Costco membership to access fuel.
Some Reddit posts claim that Costco gas has the exact same quality as other gas companies like Shell, Mobil and Texaco.
Additionally, some Reddit users believe Costco buys their gas from these very refineries and renames it under their own Kirkland brand.
The only real difference between Costco gas and, say, Shell is that Costco adds fuel additives on site (to save money), as opposed to the refinery fuel rack.
Costco gas has the same additive requirements that Mobil, Texaco or Shell.
Costco Gas Has Ethanol
Online reports indicate that Costco 91 unleaded gasoline does not contain ethanol because it is considered a Top Tier gasoline.
Costco’s Kirkland Signature gasoline contains 10% of ethanol as per The Energy Independence.
Costco Gas also offers the option to add fuel at all pump locations.
Is Costco Gas Bad For Your Car?
Kirkland Signature gasoline also contains high amounts detergent additives. They help increase both the quality and cleanliness your engine.
The gasoline can therefore be classified as Top Tier.
Also, Costco’s brand-name gas exceeds US Environmental Protection Agency’s minimum additive requirements.
AAA examined the distinction between Top Tier and Gas that meets the minimum government requirements.
The researchers also discovered that Top Tier fuel produced 19 times more intake valve deposits than engines running on regular gasoline.
Is Costco’s Regular Gas As Good As Premium Gas?
Costco has both premium Kirkland Signature gasoline and regular Kirkland Signature gasoline so that you can fill up your car with excellent fuel.
All the fuel sold at Costco gas stations has higher than average quantities of detergent additives.
Thus, Costco regular gas and its premium gasoline meet Top Tier standards.
The main difference between premium Kirkland Signature gasoline and regular Kirkland Signaturegas is its octane content.
Make sure you only refuel at the specified octane level in your owner’s manual.
What Other Gas Stations Offer “Top Tier” Gas?
Aside from Costco, there are plenty of other gas stations in the US that sell fuel that meets Top Tier standards.

However, the chances are that Costco’s prices will be significantly lower per gallon.
Is Costco Gas Popular?
Costco gasoline has a lot of popularity. Costco Kirkland Signature fuel is high quality. It is also very affordable.
But, it is also its biggest disadvantage.
You could also have someone drive you to Costco so you can do your shopping while you wait.
Kirkland Signature gasoline is high-quality and great value at Costco gas stations.
The high quantities of detergent additives in both Costco’s premium and regular gas means it meets strict Top Tier performance standards.
It also manages to cost several cents per gallon less than most of its closest competitors.
Costco gas can only be filled up with the downsides: long queues at stations, and an annual fee to join.
The benefits outweigh any drawbacks.
