What Smell Do Roaches Love?

Now that we know what scents cockroaches hate, let’s talk about what they love. You can keep these smells from being exposed.

Roaches love the smell of sweets. Cockroaches love sugary sweets, such as cookies and chocolate. If you keep sugar on the counter for baking, be sure it’s sealed properly to keep the roaches away!

Food, in general, will attract cockroaches, but they are particularly attracted to starches. Bread, potato, rice, pasta, and any other food that contains starch are all good options. These foods should be sealed tightly.

How Do Roaches Get Into My Home?

Roaches are very resourceful creatures that can find the littlest ways to get inside your homes. Because they are relatively small, they can find their way inside through small holes and cracks, openings in doors and windows, traveling within pipes and holes in walls, and traveling on you or your pets.

You can identify areas in which roaches might hide and smuggle into your home and take extra care of them. You should look behind refrigerators, inside drawers, under sinks, and in other dark spaces. Roaches forage for food at night and will eat a variety of different things – which helps them to survive in clean homes.

How To Keep Cockroaches Away At Night

Method 1: Cockroaches hate light! Keep the lights on.

While it doesn’t really make a big difference in cockroach activity, having lights on can help. These tiny creatures are primarily attracted to dark, damp, and moist areas where they would hope to find any food leftovers, and this is why you will often see fewer roaches crawling over your house with lights on. Cockroaches are more comfortable to see in the dark.

A nightlight would also not harm the cockroaches. They would continue to hunt for their sustenance.

The only thing that really makes a difference, is the use of ultraviolet light. This light repels cockroaches. It can prevent adult cockroaches from reaching towards you and decrease their rate of egg production as well.

However, you will need concentrated UV light to help prevent the roaches from entering your house. The light should be placed near the bed to prevent cockroaches from entering your home. You will also be amazed to learn that a few species of roaches are attracted to light.

Food is a necessity

Cockroaches are attracted to food because it is easy for them to get into our houses. These insects aren’t picky eaters–almost anything left out on your kitchen counters is fair game to them, and they’ll be drawn to it. Because of this, one of the most effective defenses for keeping roaches out of your home is locking away all food in places roaches can’t reach or smell.

Of course, even doing this won’t necessarily deter cockroaches, because their diet is quite a bit different than ours. Beyond regular food, it’s not unusual for roaches to feed on other items commonly found in our homes, including paper, books, cardboard and even some types of wood. This means that cleaning up clutter is also an integral part of making your house less hospitable to cockroaches.

Different types of Cockroaches

There are 69 species of cockroaches in North America, but only a handful infest structures. It is important to know which type of cockroach you have so that you can determine how best to handle it.

German cockroaches need warmth, moisture and food. This is why you will find them most often in bathrooms and kitchens. Cracks and crevices beneath sinks and toilets, under/behind stoves, dishwashers, stoves, garbage containers, inside cabinets, pantries, and behind trash cans are all good places to hide. German cockroaches can also be found in toaster ovens and clocks. They can also be found in closets and bedrooms when there are large populations or food shortages. German roaches spend most of their time hidden in cracks and crevices, but can be quite mobile. They often travel between rooms or adjoining apartments via walls, ceilings, pipes, wires and other openings.

Brown-banded cockroaches can be found anywhere in the home and are often found in rooms other than kitchens and bathrooms. The preferred locations are the ceilings, behind wall decorations and picture frames, as well as inside and underneath furniture. This roach attaches its pea-sized egg capsules to hidden surfaces, such as the undersides of dressers and tables.

They are mostly outdoor cockroaches and live under loose bark, dead trees, logs, or woodpiles. Although they cannot live indoors, their presence can cause problems in the spring and summer as large numbers of them wander in from the outside. They are also brought into homes during winter in firewood. Large numbers of woods cockroaches are sometimes found nesting in rain gutters and crawl spaces.

The Minty Smell Repulses Cockroaches

Everyone loves the fresh smell of mint. It can be found in chocolates, ice creams, and hard candy. Whatever your preference, humans seem to enjoy the smell of mint.

Roaches? Not so much.

This is good news! In a study done with German Cockroaches, corn mint oil was found to be highly effective at repelling roaches.

Corn mint oil is a mixture of menthol, menthone and menthol that repels cockroaches. It can be purchased online through Plant Guru’s Cornmint Essential Oil.

Essential oils are typically concentrated, undiluted oils derived from plants. You can prolong the shelf life of your container by adding water to dilute it.

To use corn mint oil to repel cockroaches, place 12-16 drops of the essential oil for every cup of water. Place the mixture in a glass spray bottle. Once you’ve established the cockroach hotspots using your sticky traps, spray the areas vigorously.

Reapplying spray should be done at least once per week. However, every 3 to 5 days is better. Remember to spray cracks, openings and holes. Spraying large open spaces will not be as effective as spraying the cracks where roaches hide.

Another mint-family relative is catnip. Although catnip can be attractive to cats, and make them sleepy after it has calming properties, it repels cockroaches.

Repair Cracks and Opens

Cockroaches have to find a way to get into your room before they can potentially end up in your bed. Cockroaches can’t get in through a bedroom window.

Roaches are agile and persistent. Roaches can reach tiny cracks or voids like they are nothing.

You can do yourself a favor by inspecting the surrounding area to find any possible access points. Attention to trim around doors and windows. Cracks tend to form as your home settles, leaving behind voids that have more than enough room to let a roach through.

To eliminate any entry points, use caulk or sealant. You will be able to rest peacefully at night, as cockroaches won’t bother you.

It’s a good idea to look around baseboards, ceiling trim, and molding, too. Small holes formed during installation can let smaller bugs through. The same goes for cracks around outlets, light fixtures, and more.

Finally, take a look at your bedroom door. Do you see a gap under your bedroom door? While that gap is essential for ventilation, it may be worth it to close things up.

Quick Tip: You can install weatherstripping or simple foam door seals. That should keep any stray cockroaches from getting in as you sleep.

Boric Acid: True

Although it is effective in exterminating cockroaches. Please make sure to adhere to all safety precautions when using it at your home. Boric acid is a neurotoxin and destroys the gut lining.

You could simply sprinkle it lightly along places where cockroaches are active, and as they walk through the boric acid powder it will cling to the roaches. When roaches groom themselves, they will ingest the boric acid on their bodies and subsequently die.

The ideal situation is that cockroaches consume the boric acid bait and return to their nest, where they die. After this, other roaches will take the poisoned rats and eat them. So don’t use boric acid bait at the same time you are using cockroach traps. Traps prevent poisoned roaches from returning to the nest to poison others.

Baited Traps

Another popular, and easy way to kill roaches overnight, is to use baited roach traps. The traps trap the roaches with either glue, other substances or poisoned food. The poison is then ingested by the cockroach, which returns to the nest where it dies. The poison is then ingested by other roaches.

Baited traps should be placed in areas that appeal to cockroaches, like the bases of walls, under sinks, behind appliances, and in dark, warm areas. The more baited traps you put out, the faster you’ll take care of your cockroach problem. After the roaches have died, you should remove the traps. You don’t want to attract new cockroaches.

How to Prevent Cockroaches

Many methods can be used to repel roaches. We will share some of our most popular strategies to help you make your home less inviting for them.

Here’s how to prevent cockroaches:

The best way to control roaches is to keep your house in good shape. This is especially true if you have items lying around. Your home will be less likely to become a refuge for them during the day if it is clear of clutter. These bugs won’t have any cover to hide from their midday scurrying so they will need to make more effort to conceal their existence.

  • In the vicinity of windows and doors
  • The foundation and roof are located along the sides
  • Attic and crawl space vents
  • Locate the holes for gas and electric lines around them

Gel Baits

Although it may sound cruel to exterminate roaches, they can also cause serious health problems. Some insecticides can leave toxic residue behind, so you might want to stay clear of these pesticides. And that’s where gel baits come in. They’re not only effective but also safer. Roaches often find gel bait too irresistible. Roaches will either crawl to the nests or die after they have absorbed the gel.

This is just the start. Each bug that dies can take up to 40 more with it. Roaches feed on their dead mates, and in doing so, they ingest the gel and die as well. With continued use and time, you will clear their nests from your house and rid it of all roaches.

How To Deal With Cockroaches

The first step in dealing with an infestation of cockroaches is to investigate.

The nest is usually located in dark areas that are free of vibrations and noise. There are three species of cockroaches commonly found in Australian homes: the German cockroach, the Australian cockroach and the American cockroach, and all of them prefer warm, moist areas.

This means you’ll most likely be able to find their nests near plumbing fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens, within cracks in cupboards, under drawers and inside or underneath appliances. You may also notice cockroach droppings around the nest’s location, or your nose can help you sniff it out — most cockroach nests have a strong, foul odour.

Of course, baits won’t stop cockroaches from entering your home in the first place. To ensure maximum protection against cockroaches, you should use baits along with an exterior spray like the Mortein Kill & Protect Crawling Insect Surface Barrier Barrier. This will kill them as soon as they enter your home.

Method 2: Use Smell Based Repellents

One thing that works for sure is using certain kinds of smells to keep cockroaches away at night.

You may not know that cockroaches are sensitive to smell. If they smell something they dislike, they will run fast. Even more shocking is that roaches dislike the same smells humans enjoy! You don’t have to believe me. Read along to know that it’s true and it works every time.

I am sure you must’ve heard about essential oils, right? These are full of essence, and their fragrance is strong enough to be smelt by the roaches from a distance and enough for them to turn their backs away. They include:

  • Rosemary
  • Papermint
  • Oregano
  • Eucapytus
  • Lavender
  • Citrus

You can use one of the oils mentioned above by mixing it in a spray bottle with some water and start spraying it all around your bed and areas where you want no cockroaches near. You can spray it over the bedsheets and in any corners where you might find one.

You can use essential oils and special spices to repel cockroaches at night. Bay leaves, for example, have a strong scent that will help to get rid of them at night. You can simply place some bay leaves into a bowl, and then keep the bowl in an area where there are no cockroaches. To make sure that no cockroaches wander around your home at night, cinnamon sticks can be used with fresh herbs.

Why Do I Have Cockroaches In My House?

You want to know how to get rid of cockroaches at night. Before you can do this, it’s important to determine the root cause of the infestation.

The first thing you need to know about cockroaches is that they can pretty much eat anything as long as it’s organic. Although they do enjoy sweets and meats, they will eat any kind of starch or paper trash.

Dirt, trash, unwashed dishes, food scraps, or even a leaking water pipe can become a beacon for these insidious little beasts. Cockroaches can be compared to a dirty and untidy home. And cockroaches aren’t territorial by nature; they’ll build their nests anywhere regardless of who or what lives there. They’re an invasive species.

Are roaches able to climb on beds?

Yes, roaches are a problem. Even with a clean sleeping space, roaches may still find their way into the bedroom.

So many people wonder how to keep roaches away from bed areas but often are at a loss with how to do so without chemicals and sticky traps. There are some tricks you can use to keep roaches away from your home without having to fumigate the entire space.

Ensure that holes, cracks, and entry points are sealed. Cockroaches can squeeze into tight spaces and get in through even the smallest cracks.

Make sure you have your windows replaced as soon as they are damaged. Seal all windows and doors with a sealant.

You can also use essential oils. Peppermint oil is an effective cockroach repellent that you can mix with water and spray around the bed to keep roaches at bay.

The potential of catnip oil as an anti-cockroach oil in Germany has been demonstrated. A component of the thyme oil can also be fatal to certain stages of German cockroach life.

American cockroaches are further repelled by turmeric, ginger, clove, cinnamon, and lemongrass.

Bedding that drags on the floor should be picked up and tucked, and bed skirts should be put away. Any sort of hold a roach can grab, they will use to get into the warmth of your bed. This is certainly not something you want to wake up to.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the stronger smelling essential oils. The most effective way of using tea tree oil against roaches is to combine it with vinegar and water. Mixing 1 part vinegar, 4 parts of water, and 2 drops of the tea tree oil in a spray bottle and spraying in areas around the kitchen and other affected areas will see an improvement.

Diluting the oil with vinegar and water won’t be quite as strong, but it will be better for your home as it won’t stain anything and still helps to kill and deter roaches.

Bay Leaves: Mostly False

It is believed that roaches can be dispelled by the scent of bay leaves or corners of cabinets.

The essential oil from bay leaves has the potential to kill certain pests, but this involves applying oil distilled from the leaves in such a way that insects are exposed to it directly.

It’s not worth putting a few bay leaves around.
