Method 1: Cockroaches hate light! Keep the lights on.

While it doesn’t really make a big difference in cockroach activity, having lights on can help. These tiny creatures are primarily attracted to dark, damp, and moist areas where they would hope to find any food leftovers, and this is why you will often see fewer roaches crawling over your house with lights on. Cockroaches are more comfortable to see in the dark.

A nightlight would also not harm the cockroaches. They would continue to hunt for their sustenance.

Different types of Cockroaches

German cockroaches need warmth, moisture and food. This is why you will find them most often in bathrooms and kitchens. Cracks and crevices beneath sinks and toilets, under/behind stoves, dishwashers, stoves, garbage containers, inside cabinets, pantries, and behind trash cans are all good places to hide. This roach attaches its pea-sized egg capsules to hidden surfaces, such as the undersides of dressers and tables.

They are mostly outdoor cockroaches and live under loose bark, dead trees, logs, or woodpiles. Although they cannot live indoors, their presence can cause problems in the spring and summer as large numbers of them wander in from the outside. They are also brought into homes during winter in firewood. Large numbers of woods cockroaches are sometimes found nesting in rain gutters and crawl spaces.

The Minty Smell Repulses Cockroaches

Everyone loves the fresh smell of mint. It can be found in chocolates, ice creams, and hard candy. Whatever your preference, humans seem to enjoy the smell of mint.

Roaches? Not so much.

This is good news! In a study done with German Cockroaches, corn mint oil was found to be highly effective at repelling roaches.

Corn mint oil is a mixture of menthol, menthone and menthol that repels cockroaches. It can be purchased online through Plant Guru’s Cornmint Essential Oil.

Essential oils are typically concentrated, undiluted oils derived from plants. You can prolong the shelf life of your container by adding water to dilute it.

To use corn mint oil to repel cockroaches, place 12-16 drops of the essential oil for every cup of water. Place the mixture in a glass spray bottle. Once you’ve established the cockroach hotspots using your sticky traps, spray the areas vigorously.

Reapplying spray should be done at least once per week. However, every 3 to 5 days is better. Remember to spray cracks, openings and holes. Spraying large open spaces will not be as effective as spraying the cracks where roaches hide.

Another mint-family relative is catnip. Although catnip can be attractive to cats, and make them sleepy after it has calming properties, it repels cockroaches.

Repair Cracks and Opens

Cockroaches have to find a way to get into your room before they can potentially end up in your bed. Cockroaches can’t get in through a bedroom window.

Roaches are agile and persistent. Roaches can reach tiny cracks or voids like they are nothing.

You can do yourself a favor by inspecting the surrounding area to find any possible access points. Attention to trim around doors and windows. Cracks tend to form as your home settles, leaving behind voids that have more than enough room to let a roach through.

To eliminate any entry points, use caulk or sealant. You will be able to rest peacefully at night, as cockroaches won’t bother you.

It’s a good idea to look around baseboards, ceiling trim, and molding, too. Small holes formed during installation can let smaller bugs through. The same goes for cracks around outlets, light fixtures, and more.

Finally, take a look at your bedroom door. Do you see a gap under your bedroom door? While that gap is essential for ventilation, it may be worth it to close things up.

Quick Tip: You can install weatherstripping or simple foam door seals. That should keep any stray cockroaches from getting in as you sleep.

Boric Acid: True

Although it is effective in exterminating cockroaches. Please make sure to adhere to all safety precautions when using it at your home. Boric acid is a neurotoxin and destroys the gut lining.

You could simply sprinkle it lightly along places where cockroaches are active, and as they walk through the boric acid powder it will cling to the roaches. When roaches groom themselves, they will ingest the boric acid on their bodies and subsequently die.

The ideal situation is that cockroaches consume the boric acid bait and return to their nest, where they die. After this, other roaches will take the poisoned rats and eat them. So don’t use boric acid bait at the same time you are using cockroach traps. Traps prevent poisoned roaches from returning to the nest to poison others.

The poison is then ingested by the cockroach, which returns to the nest where it dies. The poison is then ingested by other roaches.
