Can Wasps Be Repelled? How effective are repellents? The Myths Busted!
If you are first bitten by wasps you should get them out as quickly and effectively as possible. You don’t have to kill every wasp in the hive. Follow the Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture’s recommendation: A dilute solution of ammonia (approximately six ounces of ammonia to one gallon of water), sprayed around trash cans, sprayed onto outdoor tables and food prep surfaces can repel yellow jackets. You should use household ammonia and not Clorox (bleach).
Mint is yet another natural method. Mint oil is believed to repel yellow jackets. People still use mint oil or mint-based products in order to stop wasps from entering their homes. But there is no research data available to support this idea. If you decide to give this plant a try, please don’t be discouraged if the results are not satisfactory.
According to scientists, there are no guarantees that wasps will be protected 100%. Oklahoma State University scientists explained that the nests of social wasps (paper and yellow jackets), should be kept clean and not disturbed. Wasps and bees often visit garbage cans in picnic areas and other recreation sites, so it is best to avoid sitting or standing next to such sites. Sweet-smelling perfumes, colognes, and clothing that smells sweet are not recommended. They can attract wasps. Don’t forget to always put away food and drinks!
A positive study however showed that wasp repelling is possible. Only 17 of 21 oils that were tested showed significant repellency to yellow jackets and paper bees.
Unfortunately we are unable to locate any scientific evidence that supports the idea of ready-to buy wasp repellents. Manufacturers of wasp-control products aren’t going away and will continue inventing and improving their products.
