Walmart’s Paid Leave Policy (PTO) may seem unfamiliar to new employees. Unlike most retail stores, Walmart has a very generous PTO Policy for associates.

Walmart offers Paid Time Off (PTO). It allows you to use your time to care for yourself, take care of family, and spend time with loved ones. If associates have a balance, PTO may be started at 15 minute intervals. There is no limit to the amount of time that can be used. Walmart will deny PTO if it is not requested by the associates as soon as possible.

What is the Difference between Regular and Protected PTO at Walmart?

Walmart offers two kinds of paid time off (PTO), Regular PTO or Protected. This is to help associates have a balanced work/life life.

Regular PTO allows associates to schedule time off in advance to spend with their families, take care of medical needs, and enjoy the holidays without worrying if they will be paid.

Protected Time Off covers any health-related emergency or family member.

If you are in an emergency situation, it is easy to worry about the impact on your job. However, Walmart’s Protected Time Off provides security for associates who need to temporarily take leave without fear of losing their jobs.

Walmart Employees Who Are Eligible to Take Personal Leave

Walmart allows hourly full time, part-time, or seasonal employees to earn PTO. PTO rates vary depending on which category you fall under.

Although seasonal workers and temporary employees can be entitled to PTO they do not earn the same amount as regular PTO.

How Is Walmart PTO Calculated?

Walmart’s accrued PTO hours depend on the hourly wage or the salary of an associate, their position, and how long they have worked for the company.

If an employee works at Walmart for 3 years, for example, PTO may be earned at 1 hour per 11.8 hours.

However, employees that have worked 20 years may earn PTO at a rate of 1 hour for every 6.8 hours worked, and a more detailed schedule can be found after logging into the Walmart Employee Portal or reading the Wire.

It might surprise you to know that associates may continue to accumulate PTO even though they’re using it.

What if I work on a holiday? Can my PTO be used that day?

Walmart stores may open on holidays and associates could be expected to work. Associates may choose to spend the day at home with their families, or they can use PTO hours.

You cannot, however, use your PTO hours to be paid for work at the store on a holiday.

What is a PTO Plan Year, and How Does It Work?

Separate from a calendar year, the Walmart PTO plan year runs from February 1st to January 31st of the following year.

Do I Lose My Accrued PTO Hours At The End Of The Year?

You can carry over up to 80 hours of PTO (for FT Associates) and 48 hours (for PT Associates) at the end of your plan year.

Associates with PTO hours exceeding these numbers will be able to have their balance paid out on February 1st.

This money can be taxed, so cash out payments are subject to the same taxes that regular hourly wages.

How Do I Request PTO At Walmart?

If you want to apply for a PTO, please visit the Global Time & Attendance(GTAP) portal.

To ensure availability of substitute staff, employees must inform management immediately.

GTAP automatically decides which PTO type is best for your case.

You can take sick leave to use any protected PTO.

Aside from the unpredictability of illness, PTO requests for sick days will not be considered excused absentees, provided you have sufficient Protected PTO to pay the required time.

Other reasons that an associate may require PTO will, including waiting for short-term disability, be treated as regular PTO.

Walmart Associates: How Many Consecutive Hours of PTO can they Use?

When requesting PTO, associates can start requests at 15-minute intervals.

As long as there is enough PTO available, there’s no restriction on how many consecutive day requests can be made.

What happens if I need more time off?

You are eligible for short-term disability benefits if you’re a Walmart associate who works full time. This will extend your pay time off in the event of a serious medical condition.

An LOA can be applied for in cases where short-term disabilities cannot be used. For example, if a loved one is ill.

Can Walmart Deny PTO?

Walmart employees must ask for PTO in the earliest possible time they notice an absence. The request may be refused if the associate doesn’t have sufficient PTO hours.

Management can also deny PTO requests if there are not enough employees to meet your absence.

Walmart’s attendance policy permits for absences to still be counted.
