Aldi, a German supermarket chain has been present in America since 1970s. Lidl is a rival. Lidl, which has its headquarters in Virginia now boasts about 100 stores to Aldi’s 2,200+.
Aldi vs Lidl share many similarities, including both grocery stores selling private labels products, the emphasis on passing on savings and store locations (11,000 Aldi stores, 11200 Lidl shops worldwide). The Albrecht brothers also started Aldi and Lidl.
Although there are a lot of sites that claim that Aldi is cheaper than Lidl, it’s not true. I compared a handful of random products and decided that this was unlikely. First, I researched produce.
Aldi’s 12-oz organic kale-greens bag is just $2.89; however, the bag was smaller (10 ounces), and was on sale at $2.29.
A pack of three green bell peppers at Aldi sell for the low price of $2.19 per pack; Lidl sells them for $1.99 each (and they knock about 60 cents off when they’re on sale).
So I was surprised to find that baking staples were showing more improvement. A 2-lb bag of light brown sugar sells for $1.29 at Aldi, and it’s the same at Lidl.
I did find a difference in extra virgin olive oil, however. Aldi’s container sells for 18 cents per ounce, while Lidl’s will set you back 22.8 cents (they are in different size containers, with Lidl selling the larger one).
Pure vanilla extract was another product Aldi beat Lidl on, a more expensive ingredient than sugar and flour. Aldi offers two fluid ounces at $3.25, while Lidl sells them for $3.39.
Without comparing every single item in each store, it’s clear that while Aldi might undercut Lidl where a few items are concerned, Lidl stays competitive on the whole.
The difference in locations between Aldi and Lidl is perhaps one of the biggest discrepancies between the two.
As mentioned, Aldi has over, 2,000 stores in the US, in 37 states, including on all three coastlines (that’s East, West and Gulf). Batavia in Illinois is Homebase.
Lidl’s expansion in the US was only started in 2017 and now there are 100 of them. They also have a Virginia headquarters.
Aldi maintains 10,000 outlets worldwide, with many of these stores located in Europe, South America and Australia. Lidl is second with 11200 stores in 32 countries.
Aldi may hold the US market advantage but Lidl’s stores are outnumbering them internationally. Lidl recently increased their growth. The company aims to have an additional 50 stores operating by the end of 2021.
Aldi shoppers who are brand new to Aldi are often impressed with the product’s quality. Aldi lovers who have tried Lidl are also likely to be very impressed, particularly when it comes down to private-label products.
Sometimes, the reviewers prefer Aldi to Lidl because they feel the product is fresher.
This comparison makes sense since people often complain about Aldi’s produce sections being too inconsistent.
Lidl’s bakery has fresh-baked bread! So when we say “fresh-baked” that literally means baked in-store and put out for sale the same day.
Plastic packaging is not as prevalent on produce. A shopper noticed that there wasn’t much bagged produce in Lidl. Another noticed that the produce section at Lidl is just larger in general, too.
Lidl sells bulk nuts! Lidl allows you to buy the exact amount you need. Bakers rejoice! If you’re a serious snacker, however, then you can order in bulk.
International food – Lidl carries a surprising selection of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, like ready-made falafel patties (boxed, too) and bottled tahini, as well as Turkish-style pizza, stuffed cabbage, couscous, and a trio of gelato flavors.
Frozen dinners – Aldi’s US store doesn’t have microwaveable meals. We could not ask for more. Lidl does carry these, making for a convenient and quick lunch or dinner.
Lidl boasts that it has 80 percent stock from its own private store labels, compared with Aldi’s 90%. But this seems like much less. Lidl sells many of the trusted name brands, such as King’s Hawaiian rolls (with Daisy sour cream), Wholly Guacamole and Green Giant frozen vegetable soups.
Aldi doesn’t sell gift cards all year, so Lidl offers them. Gap, Ulta and Home Depot are some of the stores that sell them.
Aldi & Lidl also sell different products. However, inside shops you will have a very diverse feeling. Here are some of the major contrasts.
Aldi shoppers do not need quarters. Nothing frustrates more Aldi shoppers than having to show up with big bags and no quarter. Lidl does not rent out carts, so it isn’t an issue. A great thing is that you do not have to carry around two of these huge boys if all you want are few products. For easier mobility around Lidl’s store, Lidl offers half-sized carts.
Lidls stores can be larger and have more stores! Aldi stores are approximately 12,000 square feet in size, but a Lidl store is about 20,000.
Aldi has a well-known check-out. Its sitting cashiers are faster than those who sit. Lidl cashiers will be standing, however.
If the shopper takes longer than the cashier to scan items, the cashier may be able to start scanning items from the next person and will not have to worry about items getting lost.
Music playing – For as small as Aldi stores are, they can sometimes feel as though they are missing something – a little background noise? Aldi’s way of keeping costs down is to not pay anyone any money for the right music they play in their stores.
Lidl, on the other hand, is willing to pay to play some tunes, so shoppers will likely hear a familiar song while perusing the aisles.
Lidl’s rewards program includes myLidl (a similar program to the shoppers club) and an accompanying app. Available for Android as well as iOS. Within the app, the company runs “games” that shoppers can win simply by buying their groceries at Lidl.
Shoppers who win a game (by spending certain amounts) get a reward like a coupon to save a set amount on their next trip.
Lidl is different from Aldi because it offers both coupons in general as well as coupons to win monthly games. Aldi only releases coupons once a year.
You can also order your groceries through the app. Aldi partners with Instacart to offer mobile grocery shopping.

Aldi is more like a German cousin than a sibling, but they have many differences. Their goal? To corner the market with budget-friendly staples while also bringing in high-end customers by offering weekly special finds.
What will happen to Aldi’s US grocery giant, Lidl? While it is too early to predict, there will be benefits for customers as these two grocery giants compete in the US.
Which Is More Expensive Lidl Or Aldi?
Aldi narrowly beat Lidl, the cheapest supermarket in 2020, to be crowned the cheapest supermarket. Lidl was however the cheapest supermarket to buy a December basket with 22 groceries at PS23.29. Aldi’s basket cost PS23.64. Jan 19, 2020
Is Aldi or Lidl The Same?
Aldi & Lidl can be difficult to differentiate. Their names are similar. They’re also known for having low prices and discount copies of products. … The basket contained both brand-name products like eggs and apples, as well as branded products such as Hovis bread. Oct 15, 2021
How Do Aldi And Lidl Compare?
Aldi is unique in its use of private-label items. However, Lidl has the advantage. Lidl offers more promotions than Aldi. Lidl employs EDLP promotion for non-foods unlike Aldi. Lidl was founded in 1930. This is a lot later than Aldi.
Two Brothers Are Lidl and Aldi Owners?
Aldi and Lidl are both owned by Germans but their owners are not related. Lidl’s origins trace back to Josef Schwarz who started in the grocery business in the 1930’s but opened the first Lidl store in 1973.
