So I was surprised to find that baking staples were showing more improvement. A 2-lb bag of light brown sugar sells for $1.29 at Aldi, and it’s the same at Lidl.

I did find a difference in extra virgin olive oil, however. Aldi’s container sells for 18 cents per ounce, while Lidl’s will set you back 22.8 cents (they are in different size containers, with Lidl selling the larger one).

Pure vanilla extract was another product Aldi beat Lidl on, a more expensive ingredient than sugar and flour. Aldi offers two fluid ounces at $3.25, while Lidl sells them for $3.39.

Without comparing every single item in each store, it’s clear that while Aldi might undercut Lidl where a few items are concerned, Lidl stays competitive on the whole.

The price differences between supermarkets are there, although it is not as much as I had expected. In many categories, Lidl actually beats Aldi in prices!

The difference in locations between Aldi and Lidl is perhaps one of the biggest discrepancies between the two.

As mentioned, Aldi has over, 2,000 stores in the US, in 37 states, including on all three coastlines (that’s East, West and Gulf). Batavia in Illinois is Homebase.

Lidl’s expansion in the US was only started in 2017 and now there are 100 of them. They also have a Virginia headquarters.

Aldi maintains 10,000 outlets worldwide, with many of these stores located in Europe, South America and Australia. Lidl is second with 11200 stores in 32 countries.

Aldi may hold the US market advantage but Lidl’s stores are outnumbering them internationally. Lidl recently increased their growth. The company aims to have an additional 50 stores operating by the end of 2021.

International food – Lidl carries a surprising selection of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, like ready-made falafel patties (boxed, too) and bottled tahini, as well as Turkish-style pizza, stuffed cabbage, couscous, and a trio of gelato flavors.

Aldi doesn’t sell gift cards all year, so Lidl offers them. Gap, Ulta and Home Depot are some of the stores that sell them.

Aldi shoppers do not need quarters. Nothing frustrates more Aldi shoppers than having to show up with big bags and no quarter. Lidl does not rent out carts, so it isn’t an issue. If the shopper takes longer than the cashier to scan items, the cashier may be able to start scanning items from the next person and will not have to worry about items getting lost.

Music playing – For as small as Aldi stores are, they can sometimes feel as though they are missing something – a little background noise? Aldi’s way of keeping costs down is to not pay anyone any money for the right music they play in their stores.

Lidl, on the other hand, is willing to pay to play some tunes, so shoppers will likely hear a familiar song while perusing the aisles.

Lidl’s rewards program includes myLidl (a similar program to the shoppers club) and an accompanying app. Available for Android as well as iOS. Within the app, the company runs “games” that shoppers can win simply by buying their groceries at Lidl.

Shoppers who win a game (by spending certain amounts) get a reward like a coupon to save a set amount on their next trip.

Lidl is different from Aldi because it offers both coupons in general as well as coupons to win monthly games. Aldi only releases coupons once a year.
