Do Rodents, Such As Mice And Rats, Carry Diseases?
Rodents such as mice or rats are common in NY during winter.
Globally, more than 35 diseases can be spread by rats and mice.
The diseases that rats and mice can spread directly to humans include: leptospirosis, rat-bite fever, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM), salmonellosis, lassa fever and south American arenaviruses.
Hantavirus pneumonia syndrome (or HPS) is transmitted by the white-footed and deer mouse, as well as cotton rats and rice rodents. This relatively rare disease is caused by a virus and can spread by direct contact with rats or mice, their droppings or their urine, as well as breathing in dust that's been contaminated with rodent droppings or urine. The disease can also be contracted by biting a rodent or mouse. However, this is a very rare possibility. HPS symptoms include fatigue, fever and muscle aches. They can also cause dizziness and headaches. There are symptoms in the second phase of HPS that include shortness and coughing. HPS death rate is approximately 38 percent.
Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) is a viral infectious disease spread by the house mouse. An estimated five percent of house mice in the United States carry the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). Like HPS, lymphocytic choriomeningitis is spread through direct contact with rodents, their urine or their droppings, contact with dust contaminated with droppings or urine or bite wounds. While fever is the main symptom of infection, most people infected with LCM do not experience any symptoms. LCM is also known to cause neurological disorders, which are very rare but can be fatal.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread by various rodents as well as other animals. By eating or drinking food or liquids contaminated by urine from infected rodents, you can get the disease. The diseases can cause many different symptoms in humans, which are often mistaken as being caused by other diseases. Common signs include fever and chills. Some people with the infection may not experience any symptoms. It can cause respiratory distress, liver damage, kidney disease, meningitis, and even death if left untreated.
